A successful strategy must balance several, often competing, objectives; choosing the wrong strategy can result in delay, inefficiency, inflexibility and loss of competitive edge.

The reason for adopting a strategic view of IT is often distilled into one or more cost, performance and risk objectives. Often there is a relationship between the three, and changes affecting one aspect will cause changes in another. An obvious example is cost cutting which, unless tackling glaring inefficiencies, can have a detrimental impact on performance. Equally, trying to push performance up too quickly is a sure-fire way to increase risk. Understanding the relationship between all three enables the right balance to be struck between competing priorities and underpins the rationale for change.
